Happy New Year!!!

Hey everyone!
SO I've been really bad at this whole post once a week thing but I thought I would remember to post for New years eve so here I am! I was actually really busy the weeks I didn't post I didn't just forget about you guys :) So I had all my concerts which went really well actually. We had lots of fun singing at the senior's home and the hospital and our parties. All the parties went well too by the way! We had lots of fun and made these cool handprint  posters for the kids in Newtown, Connecticut. They're not accepting any more because of how many they got so instead you can still do it but just hang them up at YOUR school or workplace and take pictures to send instead. Obviously I've been liking my music a lot. so I could probably ramble on for a long time but I've just discovered my laptop has 15 min. of battery left and I have to post this tonight.
For starters, or whatever this would be since it's like my, third paragraph, I hope you all had wonderful holidays and any that aren't over yet continue to have wonderful holidays! If you want to comment, please tell me what you celebrate and what your favourite part of that holiday was! After that I have decided to do what a lot of people have suggested: a list of awesome moments in 2012.
Where do I start? Okay this isn't gonna be in order i'll just write it down when I remember it.
1: annual Ski Trip. So much fun! We didn't get much skiing in cuz it was too cold but we had a lot of fun hanging out together.
2: IMC (sorta) It was fun for the most part, I love band so it was fun but I was on crutches so that took a lot away from it. and the food wasn't all that great. I'm told it's a lot better in the summer though. oh well!
3: My first rock concert! I went to go see Rush perform with my best friend and her dad. It was so much fun! (Instant fan here!)
4: PlayLoud; summer band camp. Rock band camp. 2 weeks jam packed of singing and making friends and learning all sorts of neat stuff all while playing with a great band! And the performance was just amazing! Wow!
5: Brandon Jazz Festival: I've been twice now but 2012 was definitely the best. Full house for our performance and then we went to see an amazing concert live! I had so much fun and learned a lot about jazz and about my group. More new friends!
6: PHC Provincial Honor Choir was totally amazing! 3 days of singing with people who love music as much as I do! What could be better? and I met tons of new friends because I only knew 2 people in my choir level. The older choirs however... anyways, lots of fun!
It's getting hard to keep going! I have so much more but I can't think!!
7: Starting High School. That was pretty cool I guess. Lots of fun for sure! I can't believe how fast it goes though. actually I can, it's just like concert season never ends!
8: Meeting all the people in my classes, friend's friends all that but especially the people I'm in choir with. That was probably my favourite moment of 2012. Getting to know all these amazing people that make my everyday life as exciting as it is. :)
9: All the new things I've learned! It's just so much fun!! I've learned so much this year and not long from now, a new year full of new experiences and new friends and new things to learn awaits!
I'm starting to not remember much else, the year kinda went really fast. OH I have another!
10: My baby cousins were born!!!
anyways, like I said not much more to remember. I think the list will be a lot longer next year because I have a plan. I think some of you might like it too!
I decided I'm going to take a jar or a box or something (great plan kid! you don't even know what you're gonna use!) So I'm gonna take the whatever and every time something awesome happens (I think i'm gonna pick one thing from everyday) I'm going to write it down and put it in the whatever so at the end of 2013 I can look back and go awesome! and I can take it out whenever I'm having a bad day too! That should cheer me up!

I'm still alive!

I guess the title kinda says a lot on it's own.
Hi again! I have decided that because of my crazy schedule, I will post once a week. Sundays since that's the only day I'm insanely busy. although this sunday is full of baking. We're finally finishing Candy Cane bark, we're making shortbread, meringues and buttertarts. Still relatively sane though.
So this week was crazy as is every other week of my life. No change in the condition of my arm. It still can't move properly and I won't play french horn. at least for another month. So I have a lot of baking planned for tomorrow but that's not all my friends are getting. everyone on a huge list of mine is getting a personalized Christmas card (that took a couple hours) and then anyone in jazz choir is getting a cute little box of candy cane bark and shortbread and a huge personalized music poster I made myself (pictures to come when I figure out how!)
Music is and always will be my life. This week was no different. Among 2 doctors and 1 physio appointments I also had 2 band classes where I explained to the teachers about my arm and had fun listening to the music. Found out that I really know a lot of musicals when we played "name that musical tune" in class. The candlelight service was absolutely amazing and I can't believe it was a mere week ago. It seems like a month ago now. We sang for a long time and I hung out with some amazing friends of mine and we got annoyed at the MC for saying collage (piece of art) instead of college (with the french e) when introducing our school. It was really fun though and I'm glad I was there. After that though, I went to Guys and Dolls (our school musical) on opening night! It was fantastic and hilarious and knowing the actors just made it that much better. I would not have missed that for anything and I'm so glad I went!! Choir was a lot of fun too, as always. we sang a lot of warmups and started discussing Christmas which can be an interesting topic in choir(s). This week we are going to sing at a seniors Christmas Dinner right before I go to a party dedicated to the hobbit. oh and next week, well i probably shouldn't even go there. but I will. On december 19th I will be at school at 7:30 for jazz choir where I will give out presents and cards and sing! then at 8:30 when school starts, I go to physio again. after that at 10:50ish, we go sing at a seniors home. We should come back in time to have a potluck Christmas lunch with choir. After that i go to my remaining 2 classes after which I go to divisional choir!! We are going to walk to the hospital and sing there for a while and then walk back to the school and have a pizza supper and I am going to hand out cards to those I haven't already given them to.
I can't wait for the rest of my month and I wish everyone was as fortunate as me. Happy Holidays everyone and have a wonderful new year!

I'm surviving so far!

Hi again!
So I love performing and I love concert season and I am grateful that I have all these opportunities. Still, it leaves little room for error and I was so proud of myself when I didn't sprain my ankle (huge accomplishment for me by the way) anyway so I thought everything was fine and then we got into a small accident. at first it seemed like no one got hurt so it was kind of like okay we can live with that. Three days after the accident (Wednesday morning) I couldn't move my arm. now this has happened before, I hyper-extended something in my shoulder while reaching for my french horn from a high shelf. So we went to get it looked at and found out that I didn't hyper-extend anything and it's not dislocated. Technically, as far as the doctors know, there's nothing wrong with me. Obviously something is wrong but they don't know what. Anyhow enough about my arm, I wrote to tell you about my busy life lately.
So as I have said multiple times, I love performing. More than that though, I love the people I perform with. Clearly i won't say much about them other than to say that they are amazing and talented people and some of them are the reason I do what I do. Thanks everyone! So this year I have decided that to thank them for their hard work this concert season and for all their help and kind words, I will give them a yummy holiday treat. Candy cane bark is amazing but I will always say that you can't have really tasted it until you've had it homemade. I am making as much bark as I can and I'm giving it to a good part of my friends to thank them. If you don't know what it is, real candy cane bark is made from chocolate (usually white) and crushed candy canes. Now, the store bought stuff is chocolate and artificial flavoring. but if it's really handmade you can tell. I just spent 5 hours peeling 500 candy canes so that my friends will get the authentic taste they deserve. Also, if I was to go really far I would spend about 3 hours crushing the candy canes with a hammer. But i am not my grandmother and therefore I use a food processor. Either way my friends will love their present (I think).
So I told you I would tell you about my crazy life and I got side-tracked by my amazing friends. Like I told you, the 21st was an interesting day to say the least. All I can really say is that we had so much fun and I wouldn't trade that memory for anything. Since then I've had school sometimes but not too much homework, my teachers are pretty nice about the whole no time and clumsiness thing. Also, since the 21st i've had only one concert. It was a few days ago and it was a lot of fun but I never got to play my french horn because of the accident. Still fun though cuz there was still choir and lot's of amazing music. And I have another concert tomorrow. It is going to be the best concert of the whole season. It's the annual holiday candlelight concert and it will be amazing. Not only do I have the chance to be in 2 of the choirs, but I have the honor of being in the choir considered to be very talented and I am very proud of that. So I may not really be having the best week ever but I know that I will have fun and my friends will always be there for me as will I for them.

I hope all of you have a wonderful rest of the year and a great holiday no matter what you celebrate. Most of all I wish everyone was as lucky as me to have such amazing friends.

Life may kill me

Hi again!
So I've managed to survive another week at school and I think i'm doing pretty well.
I think Last week went okay and It was definitely interesting. Well first off, we found out that we may never get a new science teacher (our original science teacher had complications with her pregnancy and the replacement doesn't speak french) but we're still doing the best we can. I also found out that apparently I just got paired with some kid I don't get along with a whole lot in two classes! Oh and because our band class needs a lot more work, we're playing a Christmas piece I played two years ago when I was first starting to play French Horn. But it was fun anyways. at the two concerts I had last week we got some great comments and it was lots of fun. and of course I have the same concert for the third choir this week. I think wednesday Is going to be very interesting because I have to wake up at 5:30, make sure I'm ready for the day, get to school for 7:30 so I can practice for Jazz, leave school at 8:30 (when school normally starts) for jazz fest and come back for 1:15 (hopefully) stay in class till 3:30 then go to divisional choir until 6:00 at which point I eat supper (probably at school also) and then at 6:30 the jazz choir (again) warms up for our other concert (yes folks this is still the same day!) at 7:00 the concert starts and it will probably end at around 9:00 at which point I walk home, finish any homework I happen to have and then fall asleep. Such a lovely day huh?

Hey everyone!
I just finished my latest week of school (thank goodness!) and with all that came 3 concerts! on Thursday we had the Divisional choirs concert which was amazing! Our uniforms are surprisingly comfortable unlike those for the other choirs. So after our hour long practice 90 min. before the concert started I ended up talking to a whole bunch of people I haven't seen in a while. I talked to people during and after the concert too, I know more people than I thought would be at the concert. So anyways it was a great concert and we had tons of fun along with getting a standing ovation after singing and dancing until we were completely breathless! That was definitely the coolest concert I've ever done. The next day, (Yesterday) I went to school and had half of a science class before heading to my next two concerts, both for remembrance day. It was a beautiful ceremony and the choir sang an amazing piece called "In Remembrance" by Jefferey Ames. there was also the piper, cadets, candle lighting, the band played a whole bunch of talking and a letter reading that made me cry. Twice. Either way, it was the most beautiful school remembreance day ceremony I've ever been to. And the same choir that performed there has a performance at ChoralFest on Tuesday. We will be singing In Remembrance again, Break Break Break and Dubula. (Links at bottom)

Update on my performances!

So If you've been reading my blog you know I love to perform. So i'm branching out! At the moment I'm working on a cool new Debate for English Class. I can argue, think on my feet, I love researching and I love to talk in front of people. What could be cooler for a geek like me? So I am debating the opposition of: Human Genetic Engineering is morally justified.
Obviously I won't post details until after the debate because my opponent might still remember my blog, I'm not sure but either way I am determined and taking no chances! So a shout-out to anyone who passes by my blog, What's you're opinion on it and why?

Tomorrow is take your kid to work day so some interesting things there, Thursday is a divisional concert, Friday is the remembrance day concert, Saturday I'm volunteering at a midsummer night's dream, Sunday I'll be working on  arranging this cool song (again, more details later) and next week is equally as hectic.

Hey y'all!
So the poem I posted a few months ago was selected to be in a published book of top whatever authors! I thought it was really cool that someone obviously liked it but I had to turn them down because they needed money for it. I know I haven't posted anything for a while but I've been really getting ready for a big test and dealing with a new teacher and it's just been really hectic. So not many posts but tomorrow is my divisional choir's first concert! So once it's over i'll have so many interesting things to say!
Our songs alone are something to talk about. The first one is a Polynesian folk song called Ka Hia Manu which means many birds. I won't say much about it other than if you see a bamboo poll, duck!
Our other songs are come away sweet love which is a madrigal. I guess it sounds pretty cool and the parts fit together and it's really cool but it's not much fun to sing, oh well. the other three are Heilig, the ground and let everything that hath breath.
Heilig is in German and it's a little harder being in 8 parts and a different language but it's so beautiful I think it's worth it. The ground is in Latin (i swear music teachers have something against singing in English  and it's so pretty I just can't believe it! The last one is by far my favorite. It's called Let everything that hath breath and it is just so much fun and, well it's a gospel. I think that says everything you need to know.

Choir #3

Hey again!
So last week we received our third jazz choir assignment. It's called Undun and it's sung by Kurt Elling. There will be a link at the bottom for those of you who want to watch it and I think that's it.

So Once you listen to it you know it's clearly accompanied by a Bass, Piano, Guitar, Drums and an alto sax. It's a swung, jazzy rock ballad with the very common form of chorus, verse, bridge, chorus, verse. It's text is very intriguing and so interesting I decided to learn more. It seemed to me when I first listened to it to represent a lifelong struggle of some kind. When I found out what it actually meant I was very surprised. Randy Bachman got the idea for the song while listening to Bob Dylan's "Ballad in Plain D". When he was about to turn off the radio, he heard the line "she came undone". That reminded him of a girl he saw at a party who fell into a coma. She is what the song is all about.  Th text wasn't the only thing that was interesting though. To make the different parts stand out Elling almost melted consonants together and at the ends of his phrases there were sometimes little smears and other times, some falls. There were also some solos that really stood out. Obviously i'm not talking about the vocals because that runs through the whole tune. Bachman's guitar solo was super interesting and really unique. I really liked the chords he chose to vibrate. I think it really brought out some of the colors in the song. Bob Sheppard did a wicked sax solo right after that. It had some cool jumps in it and emphasis on some of the warmer chords too. Also, While group unity doesn't apply as much to a soloist, his band still has to pay attention and stay with each other and the singer. They did that really well and in songs like this it is especially hard for the pianist because if the singer makes a mistake, or adds parts they have to stay together and their moving parts have to be in unison or it just won't sound right. That ties in to musicality. It was great throughout the whole tune (not a song. the word song is frowned upon by jazz musicians.) anyways, great musicality. Dynamic contrast everywhere it needed to be but really noticeable at the end of phrases where he tapers off. The blend throughout the group is also great considering they are each using a different axe with a completely different voice. Lastly, I also learned a lot from this performance. I think others could too. For example, a group couldn't do some of the embellishments he puts in like smears and falls without being at least a little bit off and definitely not to that extent. Also he is a great example for confidence whether you feel it or not and the true value of stage presence.

Rick Allen

Hi again!
My latest project is in my social studies class. It's a lot of fun and I think it's entertaining us all to learn about pop- culture through the decades.
My group ended up with the 80's automatically I assigned myself the music section. I listen to a lot of music from the 80's so it wasn't very hard. I did get some interesting information though.
Have any of you ever heard of Rick Allen? If you haven't he is the drummer for Def Leppard and you should search him up when you have the chance. He's really a very interesting person. but why is he special and how did I find him? Well I remember heard about him watching switched at birth earlier today and he caught my attention because I am a huge fan of the drums because I play a little bit and I know how talented you have to be to play really well and it's amazing what people can do. Also, a drummer with one arm? What isn't interesting about that? So the little geek inside me decided to investigate further. I snooped around online, asked some people who knew about tons of bands and other people who had been to a Def Leppard concert. What I found was truly amazing. So this drummer only has one arm but why? and how can he play? that's what I wanted know. So here's the story I finally came up with.
Rick Allen was driving impaired (what is with rock stars!!?) and he got into an accident. The result of that accident was the loss of his left arm. 3 or 4 months after he got out of the hospital, his band mates came to visit him at home. They stood outside for a moment before coming in and heard someone drumming to one of their songs. They went into the house prepared to Fire him politely (come on the guy lost his arm! how could they expect him to play?) and saw that he was the one playing the drums so well. Needless to say they didn't fire him and he still plays at their gigs today. Now he plays the drums barefoot so he can feel the difference of the pedals beneath his feet. He can play the drums so well one-handed because of the way his drumkit is set up so he uses a pedal instead of actually striking a splash or a snare or whatever.

I just wanted to share that with you because I found it so interesting and It's the coolest homework I've had this year to put up.

Choir #2

So our other choir assignment so far is also by the real group. This one is called "Splanky" it's an interesting song that holds lot's of value for jazz singers.

So everything about the arrangement of the song is the same as When I fall in love.
For instance, It's still acapella, in 5 parts (the same parts), and has the same 5 people. but since it is obviously not the same song there has to be some difference, right?
The song sounds improvised but clearly is not because they are doing things at the same time.
The text is simply syllables strung together in a seemingly nonsense fashion so that you have to concentrate on the style and expressions. There is one solo and it is very interesting. It is entirely possible that this is written out, but based on the style of the song it is more likely improvised. Again they are very unified because they are listening to each other and making sure they can hear the base line no matter what.

It's a very interesting song and I like to listen to it.

Choir #1

Oops. I forgot about all my choir assignments  Okay so I did the listening and all I have to do is write down my answers to some questions. I think i'll answer 6 questions to start with.

Okay so the song is acapella. I think all of their songs are.
There are 5 singers in the group, 3 men and 2 women.
There are 5 different parts as well, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone and Bass.
The group stayed together really well and always knew what everyone else was doing.
The chord changes at 1:15 are really cool. They're super pretty throughout the whole song but especially there.
I learned a lot from this performance. mostly stylistic things but it really emphasized the value of listening to the rest of you're group.

I forgot to mention in my last post that if you think you can figure out which definitions are real and which ones are fake you should comment to see who can get the most right.

Break a leg...

My newest english project is a lot of fun! I have to pick a bizarre phrase and figure out the origin and definition behind it and then make one up and see if anyone can tell which ones are real. I chose to research break a leg. There are so many definitions out there and some of them are just so strange but I have them here anyways.

When you're not discussing theater break a leg means to make a strenuous effort so it's possible that it just means to work hard.

We all know that theatrical people are superstitious. (I can tell you that firsthand) They believe that if you say good luck to an actor you are wishing the opposite upon them. So if you tell them to break a leg we hope you mean the opposite.

Break is also a synonym to bend so They might want you to put on such a good performance you have to bow, curtsy or "break your leg" many times.

Impress the audience so much you have to bend down to pick up all the coins they throw onstage.

You should have to go onstage so many times so fast that you end up breaking the "legs" or the side curtains.

They want you to go onstage and have you're big break.

It could be a reference to Sarah Bernhardt, a great actress who had only one leg. It could also be a reference to John Wilkes Booth who broke his leg jumping onto the stage to get away after shooting president Lincoln.

The Greek and Elizabethan meanings are quite similar. Instead of clapping they would stomp their feet of band their chairs against the ground so they wanted you to put on such a good performance either their legs of the chair's legs would break.

Also, in ancient Greece when the gladiators fought, people would wish their favorites good luck by telling them to break a leg that wasn't their own.

A really cool reference to A Shakespearean performance of king Richard the lll and the actor was so entranced in his performance that he didn't notice that he had broken his leg.

So I haven't answered the questions yet, but I will get to them soon.

I already put this poem on another site and most of the comments were good. One said it was flowery and self indulgent and that I should never use the words "My_ is like a_" So sorry if this isn't your thing but those were my guidelines. Here is my metaphor poem.

Journal Entry 4

Journal Entry #4 was the most difficult by far. I think it was something about how Johnny and Ponyboy were heroes and what made someone a hero to you? Oh, and did you know any heroes?
This Question took a lot of thinking. I knew Johnny and Ponyboy were Heroes. I just had to wonder what a hero really was. Now I realize that a hero doesn't have to have superpowers or risk their life for someone else. They just have to give up one thing or make one person happy. Most of all they have to believe. Not only in others, but in themselves as well. So in my book everyone is a hero.

I know I haven't posted in a while but I just finished my part in a school musical. I am stuck in a cast though. Anyway I decided to share the poems I've been writing for English class. Here's the first one. It's called:

The River's Edge
The swiftly moving current
runs smooth as silk itself,
stopped by nothing
but life at the end,
It sweeps at every bend,
goes turning every head,
the river is everyone's friend,
the river is going to be dead.

The glistening gleam
from the river's soft sheen
will welcome the morning
since dawn's early light.

Flowing and deep
the midnight blue sheet,
after everything it's done
the river will always be my friend.



Now everyone who has read this automatically thinks that it's about a river. I don't actually know what I wrote it about, I just know that it's not about a river.

Journal Entry #2

Describe the kinds of fears you have felt. What instigated those fears? Are they still fears you have today or have you gotten over them? If so, how did you manage to overcome those fears?

When I saw that question on the slip of paper the teacher gave out I knew my answer right away. Clowns and playground swings. I know, weirdest fears ever. I have no idea why I'm afraid of clowns but I do know that I am one of very few people that didn't outgrow that fear when I was ten. So yes I am 13 years old and still have coulrophobia. I doubt I am going to overcome this fear any time soon. For example, I was volunteering for a winter carnival and Ronald McDonald came to see the little kids. I was terrified and hid behind the game I was running because my friend wanted me to hug him. My other fear, playground swings does have a reason. When I was younger my family and friends would take turns pushing me on the swings. One day I fell really hard and I haven't been on a swing since without feeling sick and scared.

I just found the rest of my journal entries and wanted to post them one at a time.

Would I ever join a gang?

In a way I would. In a way our class is a gang. A gang could just be a group of close friends regarded as a pack. On the other hand there's "street gangs". Those kinds of gangs have bad reputations. Who knows, maybe some of those gangs aren't really "bad". What does bad mean anyway? You're parents tell you not to be bad, but they never tell you what bad is. Sure I know that breaking a window, for instance is not good, but is it really bad? and if it's not bad, how can it be good? What are good and bad? They are ways of categorizing our lives. I think something is only really bad when you can't find an upside to it, and Vise Versa. So in conclusion I would join the first kind of gang. The second kind is a kind I would not join. This is because I like being known for "good" things and while I'm sure there are some "good" things about gangs, people will be very hard to convince because they are used to seeing gangs as something "bad".

(I would like to challenge you to stop using the words good and bad so loosely. This may not seem so hard but after even an hour it gets very difficult. Have fun!

Question 2: Would I be able to live with only my brothers?

I would. This is a easy question to answer. As long as I had books, music, sunsets and stars I would be able to. Books and music are how I cope and sunsets and stars are two things I find quite relaxing. Also sunsets and stars helped me to get through the deaths of my grandma and great-grandma. My brothers would not be hard to live with although their air of superiority would annoy me.

Question 3: Would I enjoy a sunrise or sunset with a friend?

Yes, I would. This is actually something I have done many times. I love being able to share my love of nature and relaxation with a friend. Sometimes, if you're quiet, a friend can make the experience even more relaxing.

Question 4: Would I stand up for what I think is right even if the people around me don't agree?

Yes. I would and I have. This is something I do quite often. If you think something is right or wrong and others don't, you should stand up for what you think. Often time at least one or two people will eventually agree with you. All this can make you is a stronger, better person.

Question 5: Would I ever write a book about my experiences?

Most definitely. That is an easy question. Although I would most likely never publish it, I would definitely write about it if it seemed worthwhile.

I do realize the format of this writing is different but I have been influenced by the writing of Jay Asher in Thirteen Reasons Why.

It is a wonderful book that I would recommend to anyone over the age of 12.

Right now I am reading the outsiders for class and to add to my project I have decided to post the Journal Entries here.

Journal Entry # 3 Chapter 5

This Chapter was mostly about Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally in the church. It begins with Ponyboy waking up and wondering where he is a moment before he remembers.  My favourite part was at the end of the chapter when Dally tells them that they have a spy- Cherry. I would really like it if I could talk to Ponyboy and talk to him about the books he’s read. I think I would get along with him fairly well because I agree with a lot of the things he has said so far and we seem to like the same activities such as reading, school, movies and hanging around with friends. I would like to ask S.E. Hinton how she came up with Ponyboy’s character.

That was what I thought about chapter 5.
