Choir #1

Oops. I forgot about all my choir assignments  Okay so I did the listening and all I have to do is write down my answers to some questions. I think i'll answer 6 questions to start with.

Okay so the song is acapella. I think all of their songs are.
There are 5 singers in the group, 3 men and 2 women.
There are 5 different parts as well, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone and Bass.
The group stayed together really well and always knew what everyone else was doing.
The chord changes at 1:15 are really cool. They're super pretty throughout the whole song but especially there.
I learned a lot from this performance. mostly stylistic things but it really emphasized the value of listening to the rest of you're group.

I forgot to mention in my last post that if you think you can figure out which definitions are real and which ones are fake you should comment to see who can get the most right.

Break a leg...

My newest english project is a lot of fun! I have to pick a bizarre phrase and figure out the origin and definition behind it and then make one up and see if anyone can tell which ones are real. I chose to research break a leg. There are so many definitions out there and some of them are just so strange but I have them here anyways.

When you're not discussing theater break a leg means to make a strenuous effort so it's possible that it just means to work hard.

We all know that theatrical people are superstitious. (I can tell you that firsthand) They believe that if you say good luck to an actor you are wishing the opposite upon them. So if you tell them to break a leg we hope you mean the opposite.

Break is also a synonym to bend so They might want you to put on such a good performance you have to bow, curtsy or "break your leg" many times.

Impress the audience so much you have to bend down to pick up all the coins they throw onstage.

You should have to go onstage so many times so fast that you end up breaking the "legs" or the side curtains.

They want you to go onstage and have you're big break.

It could be a reference to Sarah Bernhardt, a great actress who had only one leg. It could also be a reference to John Wilkes Booth who broke his leg jumping onto the stage to get away after shooting president Lincoln.

The Greek and Elizabethan meanings are quite similar. Instead of clapping they would stomp their feet of band their chairs against the ground so they wanted you to put on such a good performance either their legs of the chair's legs would break.

Also, in ancient Greece when the gladiators fought, people would wish their favorites good luck by telling them to break a leg that wasn't their own.

A really cool reference to A Shakespearean performance of king Richard the lll and the actor was so entranced in his performance that he didn't notice that he had broken his leg.

Choir assignment outline

So I just started High School and I like the idea of putting my assignments on a blog again. It makes me get them done sooner. So this time I have a cool assignment for Jazz choir. We were instructed to listen to a youtube recording of When I Fall In Love sung by The Real Group.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pszC4P_cyPE&fature=related Then we were given a sheet with a list of 13 questions and we could chose which ones to answer. So Here are the questions:
1 Is the song acapella or accompanied? If accompanied, what king of accompaniment?
2 What is the style of the song?
3 Is it a solo? A group singing in parts? How many parts? How many singers?
4 Comment on the text or language.
5 What is the form of the piece?
6 Anything in particular that stands out to you?
7 Comment on any solos you hear.
8 What do you notice about group unity?
9 What do you notice about the group's musicality?
10 Comment on specific chords or chord changes, or any interesting colours you hear.
11 What do you like/ dislike about the performance?
12 Have you learned anything from this performance?
13 Any additional thoughts?
So I haven't answered the questions yet, but I will get to them soon.

Poetry #2

I already put this poem on another site and most of the comments were good. One said it was flowery and self indulgent and that I should never use the words "My_ is like a_" So sorry if this isn't your thing but those were my guidelines. Here is my metaphor poem.
My life is like the silver moon 
that sits up in the sky, 
My life is as the vibrant moon, 
just like one big eye, 
My life becomes a dinner plate, 
wide and round and full of hope, 
My life lasts on and on and on, 
 big and bigger still 
looking for friends, 
looking for stars, 
looking to choose the right path 
 am I walking in a circle, 
orbiting around a problem, 
can't turn back, 
have to keep going 
dips and bumps, 
small to big, 
turning into craters, 
always still discovering new, 
more and more and more, 
My life is like the spinning moon 
Silver, Entrancing and Enlightening 
My life is on the moon  

Journal Entry 4

Journal Entry #4 was the most difficult by far. I think it was something about how Johnny and Ponyboy were heroes and what made someone a hero to you? Oh, and did you know any heroes?
This Question took a lot of thinking. I knew Johnny and Ponyboy were Heroes. I just had to wonder what a hero really was. Now I realize that a hero doesn't have to have superpowers or risk their life for someone else. They just have to give up one thing or make one person happy. Most of all they have to believe. Not only in others, but in themselves as well. So in my book everyone is a hero.

Poetry 1

I know I haven't posted in a while but I just finished my part in a school musical. I am stuck in a cast though. Anyway I decided to share the poems I've been writing for English class. Here's the first one. It's called:

The River's Edge
The swiftly moving current
runs smooth as silk itself,
stopped by nothing
but life at the end,
It sweeps at every bend,
goes turning every head,
the river is everyone's friend,
the river is going to be dead.

The glistening gleam
from the river's soft sheen
will welcome the morning
since dawn's early light.

Flowing and deep
the midnight blue sheet,
after everything it's done
the river will always be my friend.



Now everyone who has read this automatically thinks that it's about a river. I don't actually know what I wrote it about, I just know that it's not about a river.
